Five years ago we opened the door of our gallery, in our home in Anyós, 1,342 meters up in the mountains of Andorra, with the photographs of Vivian Maier. We did it for the simplest of reasons: we love photography, and we have lived with it all our lives.
From the start we imagined it as a gallery that could be anywhere in the world. The leading photography fairs made that possible: they welcomed us and brought our artists to collectors and curators far beyond these mountains, and we are grateful to them.
What we did not imagine then was how much of the gallery would be about people.
Many of you came up the mountain as visitors and left as friends. Artists, and the families who look after their work, trusted us with what matters most to them. And some of the best conversations we have ever had began in front of a photograph on these walls.
Love is a big word, and we try to use it carefully. But it is the right one. We have always loved photography. What the gallery taught us is that we love, just as much, sharing it with people who love it too. Those encounters are the most valuable thing these five years have given us.
So we would like to celebrate the way that feels most natural to us: with photographs, and with the stories behind them.
Five is an exhibition that will grow over the coming weeks. Five years, five journeys. Each one is the journey we have made with an artist whose work has been part of our life here: how we came to it, what we set out to do together, and what happened next. One by one they will take their place on the walls, and stay, until the gallery is full.
The first is Ramón Masats.
We are not going to tell you yet who comes next. Each one will be announced as it arrives. We can only say that one of these journeys is still under way.
The works on the walls are available, and the gallery is open, as always, by appointment. Nothing would make us happier than to celebrate with you here in Anyós.
Thank you for these five years.
Pancho, Michelle and Max
