Folk Pride · Part II: People and places
In the previous chapter, we introduced "Folk Pride", the personal project that Txema Yeste has been developing for many years and continues to expand. Today we look more closely at the people within it, and the settings in which he photographs them.
A portrait against a dark background gives particular weight to a face, a gaze or a gesture. In a group, the eye moves between people and across the colours of their clothing. Outdoors, gardens, fields and mountains become part of the composition.
The photographs change scale: a group stands small beneath a mountain in La Gomera; two men sit behind a table in Máguez, Lanzarote; a close view draws attention to the pattern of a skirt and the detail of a shoe.
These shifts between the individual and the group, the room and the landscape, are part of Yeste’s photographic language. They give this ongoing record of regional dress its human variety and the distinctive character of an important personal body of work.
The gallery is open, as always, by appointment.
