Yesterday, Madrid. Today, Pamplona. In July 1956 Masats went to the Sanfermines on his own, an amateur with very little money and a rented room, and he went back every summer after that. Nobody commissioned it: this was the one book he began by himself, and the one he laid out himself, page by page, like a film — Víspera y vísperas, La noche, El encierro, La mañana, La tarde. One hundred and fifty-two photographs out of ninety rolls of film, and the Ibarra Prize for the best-edited book of 1963.
This chapter follows his order.
With thanks to Jaime Fuster Pérez, whose doctoral thesis on Masats, El roble en el páramo (2007), tells this story.
