Sixty years ago, Joel photographed England with two cameras, one loaded with colour and one with black and white. Today London is where he lives, and where he keeps a large part of his vintage prints.

On Friday 18 September, my son Max and I knocked on his door in north London. He opened the boxes one by one, and we went through them print by print. Can you imagine the privilege of being next to Joel, looking at his own pictures with him?

Prints of photographs from the 1960s and early 1970s. One of them is the box he calls his Spanish box: the photographs he made in Spain in 1966 and 1967, on the long road trip through Europe he began at twenty-eight, with his car on a boat and two cameras round his neck, and that ended in the south, in Málaga.

Then dinner at The Bull & Last, his local, right across the road from Hampstead Heath.

To be continued, tomorrow.
