Hero, Father, Friend

Carlos lost his father when he was eighteen. "After 18 years with my father, we barely had any photographs together and now that he's no more, my memories of him feel a little distant," he writes.

In "Hero, Father, Friend" (2024), which he calls "a biopic of my father", he stages with actors the moments with a father that nobody photographed, some remembered and some only wished for: breakfast in their best suits, shaving in the morning, reading together before bed, a bicycle ride along the sea wall.

We follow the series for two chapters. Today, the father. Tomorrow, the other men who filled his absence: an uncle, a grandfather, older cousins.

The texts by Bill Shapiro and Nathalie Herschdorfer come from our Collectors Journal; Herschdorfer's are translated from the French.
