There are mornings so still that the world seems to be holding its breath before consenting to begin. This is one of them. At Provincetown the bay lies flat at dawn, and the water has become a mirror so faithful that the sky doubles itself in it, fold for fold, until the horizon is the only proof that there are two of anything at all. A thin dark band of distant shore marks the seam. Above it, peach and rose dissolve into a pale lilac; below it, the same colors return, slightly bruised, as if the water remembered the sky imperfectly.

The clouds are doing two things at once: drifting high in a loose, mackerel scatter, and lying broken across the water's surface in soft grey reflections that the light has not yet warmed. This is the hour Meyerowitz returned to again and again, the same frame at a different time, as if to prove that a single view could hold an infinity of weathers. Here it is the freshest version—not the gold of evening, not the heat of noon, but the cool first flush, when color is arriving and has not yet committed itself.

What moves me is the modesty of the means: no event, no figure, only a few buoys breaking the surface in the middle distance, the faint dark ridge of the far land, a margin of wet flat sand entering at the lower left. The photograph asks almost nothing and gives back the whole sky. Dawn, it reminds us, is not a spectacle but a temperature, a slow tilt of the light that we mostly sleep through. To have stood here and waited is itself the meaning—patience rendered as color, attention held until the bay and the sky agreed.
